How to Frame Your Print

Unframed 'Cave Fire' above looks interesting; but enlarge to get a peak at what professional framing can do. The original has been sold; but you can enjoy a print.
Some of our paintings look nice as a large poster plastic coated,
many of the original have been professionally framed by the artist. These examples give you any idea how that can enhance & even change the photos. You can use between 2 & 4 matts. Aboriginal Paintings done in traditional colours are usually framed using earthy orche matting & frames as the paintings left & below illustrate. For non-traditional colours either use matting colours or a complete contrast. Frames are often best reasonably plain so that the painting rather than the frame 'hits you in the eye'. Only a large poster would usually have a thick frame.
Skool of Fish above with identical matting; but two different frames, both match the colours in the painting, but give subtle differences.
'In Memory of Simeon' - See what framing does for this painting. From left - a/ the bare painting unframed. Perhaps a really large poster unframed might look okay in some places. b/ just put in frame without matting does nothing for this simple photo. c/ a large single matting in matching orche colours that complement, by contrast a bit to the main colours looks nice. d/ double matting, with the same main colour & frame looks more sophisticated, particularly with a smaller matting. e/ another combination of the orche colours with double matting, but wider inner matting, also looks good, f/ double.matting, again in earth tones looks great. Colour combination & matting thickness can be a matter of personal taste & what matches the decor! Use this example as a guide to frame an original painting or find a print in a colour to suit you & your space.

Cave Fire - T.T. Here is the story by the artist - "Painting to decorate camp sites was often done. This piece is in memory of that practice. Hand stencils signified that the person was in their home country, was at oneness with the land, & had guardian rights over it. Frequently paintings were done on top of paintings which were done on top of earlier paintings. In fact at times the act of painting was considered more significant than the medium used or even the subjects, scene depicted or the location of the Art. This painting attempts to recreate the multi-layered effect found at some locations.. The beauty of our Rock Art is being appreciated world wide as never before and is a great source of pride for younger Aboriginals."
Where's our Emu Whitepella? - T.T. Some of the story:- "It is not well known that a species of Emu (shorter than those found on the mainland) was unique to Tasmania. Unfortunately like some of our other unique species it became extinct in Tasmania a short time after Europeans arrived. Emus are not now found anywhere in Tasmania except for Maria Island where the government introduced them from the mainland. The European occupation of our beautiful island has not been good for the natives; look what happened to most of my relatives...... Emu, and emu tracks are found in ancient artwork in Tasmania. Obviously they were a good food source for my ancestors. I have again included markings from the world famous rock art of my people at Preminghana....... "
Billabong Gathering - A.H. This piece is by a N.S.W./Northern Territorian artist is done in our traditional ochre colours. It is a nice, simple example of traditional art; the elegant matted background colours being typical of this style of painting. The white Dot work being a nice contrast to the darker colours. Comes with an explanation of the symbols used in the piece
Cave Hunting - T.T. She writes - Modern Cave Art - Water colour pencil is the perfect medium to copy this ancient stencilled style used Australia wide. Depending on it's location, whether at a sacred site or a regular campsite, the figures had different meanings. Stencilled animal and hunting instrument figures can be found in both locations. The richness of culture and beauty of Aboriginal Rock Art....... is of special interest to younger Aborigines as we are able at last to take full pride in the rich cultural heritage which is ours."
In Memory of Simeon - T.T. The Story:- "In memory of a fine, Artist, Aboriginal & human being. The background stands for the desert sands in which he is now sleeping. The symbols are of the caterpillar dreaming stories which feature in the mythology of his people. The spiral of dots and other markings stand for eternity to which he will awaken. Simeon painted his beliefs in his art; and I now do the same. This style is a little different to that which I usually paint. As Simeon was a western desert Aboriginal, I have painted something to which his family could relate."
Wanaruah Morning - T.T. - The Story:- The Wanarauh nation are custodians of land in the Hunter Valley. This scene is set in pre-European times....... with the kangaroo near the camp. Like much of my work this painting is a mixture of different styles used during our history. I often work on water colour paper as it reminds me of the bark our people have painted on for generations.
