Traditional Aboriginal Dancing - photo taken near Kathreen N.T. Dancing like this has gone on for countless centuries. These Aborigines are living in their traditional land, but many city aborigines still learn & do traditonal dancing. In times past much dancing had religious significance as well as being done for pleasure.
Grinding Marks - Aboriginal Grinding Sites; where grain was ground into flour. This was work done by women. Contrary to common belief meat was often only a small part of the traditional diet & wowen supplied much of the food the family ate. These are from an area of a sub-clan of the Wanaruah people used near Patterson N.S.W.
Making a Sculpture - Here is an example of a talented aboriginal artist at work. Worrimi is turning a dead tree into an object of beauty. The whole tree will tell the story about the local tribe, their history & totems. The artists immediate family's past & their connection to the land will be explained to educate visitors to the area about the unbroken connection the local people still have to the land & some of the areas that are still sacred to them in this 21st century.
Carving Tree Top - Here we see the top of the tree starting to appear. Notice the many birds & animals native to the area are being carved. Dominating the site is the eagle - the totem of the artists late father - to whom the work is dedicated. When finished everything will be polished & will gleam in the sun. This is an excellent example of how Aboriginal art is both beautiful yet full of meaning & can be read like a book to a person with knowledge.
Playing a Didgeridoo - Here is a Murry-river man from South Australia playing the didgeridoo for us. He is also an artist, speaks his native language fluently & has great knowledge of his culture.
Our Babies are Beautiful - Enlargen this one to get more of the picture - need I say more. The parents of our Australian Rose are both from western N.S.W.
