The emu is the large flightless bird native to Australia. It is a little smaller than the ostrich of Africa & is found nowdays in the arid, flat country of inland Australia. (A smaller emu unique to Tasmania was hunted to extinction a short time after Europeans arrived.) The emu has aways been important to Aboriginals - often an important ancestral spirit is potrayed as an emu; emu-woman if is painting in some of our most well-known cave art in the Hunter Valley area of N.S.W. Emus were of course good food & their large eggs are still used in cooking cakes & omelets.Emu Eggs are green in colour - they can range from a teal blue green through to a very dark green. ( Each egg also has 7 different shades of green through its shell which is why they are carved.) Traditional Aboriginal people also used the yolk of the emu egg mixed with orches as paint for use in bark-paintings and body art for ceremonial purposes. The shell of the Emu egg was ground into powder and used as medicine, & was also considered an aphrodisiac..
Blown Emu Eggs have long been used in art. Some are carved; often in many different layers as the rich green colour becomes paler & even white. Exceptionally brilliant examples can be worth many hundreds of dollars. Others are painted. Again, like all our art, these paintings tell a story that has meaning & relevance to the artist. Ghost Egg
This egg is a real gem as one half is painted & other half is carved. This egg was created by a traditional aboriginal man living in outback Australia & is at least 40 years old. The aboriginal figure of a man holding a boomerang (note the authentic shape) is done in traditional orche colours with lots of dotwork. The carved face has been cut through many layers - the outer dark green layer has totally disappeared - & is quite haunting, almost ghost-like in appearance. Be sure to enlargen these photos for the full effect. Because of its authenticity & age this egg is a bargain at only $89.99
