The emu is the large flightless bird native to Australia. It is a little smaller than the ostrich of Africa & is found nowdays in the arid, flat country of inland Australia. (A smaller emu unique to Tasmania was hunted to extinction a short time after Europeans arrived.) The emu has aways been important to Aboriginals - often an important ancestral spirit is portrayed as an emu; emu-woman is painted in some of our most well-known cave art in the Hunter Valley area of N.S.W. Emus were of course good food & their large eggs are still used in cooking cakes & omelets.Emu Eggs are green in colour - they can range from a teal blue green through to a very dark green. ( Each egg also has 7 different shades of green through its shell which is why they are carved.) Traditional Aboriginal people also used the yolk of the emu egg mixed with orches as paint for use in bark-paintings and body art for ceremonial purposes. The shell of the Emu egg was ground into powder and used as medicine, & was also considered an aphrodisiac..
Blown Emu Eggs have long been used in art. Some are carved; often in many different layers as the rich green colour becomes paler & even white. Exceptionally brilliant examples can be worth many hundreds of dollars. Others are painted. Again, like all our art, these paintings tell a story that has meaning & relevance to the artist. At AboriginalArtTreasures we only sell emu eggs that are the work of Aboriginal persons & the genuine item in every sense of the word. These eggs will be treasured for many, many years & make wonderful presents. While ofcourse they should be handled with care; they are reasonable tough & not easily broken. A good egg can also be a wise investment. A genuine bit of Australiana. All eggs are around 15cm (6in) long. You can buy your egg with or without a stand. See our policy page for postage charges. All images will enlargen when clicked, so show you a good view. A traditional egg has many views.
Ghost Egg
This egg is a real gem as one half is painted & other half is carved. This egg was created by a traditional aboriginal man living in outback Australia & is at least 40 years old. The aboriginal figure of a man holding a boomerang (note the authentic shape) is done in traditional orche colours with lots of dotwork. The carved face has been cut through many layers - the outer dark green layer has totally disappeared - & is quite haunting, almost ghost-like in appearance. Be sure to enlargen these photos for the full effect. Because of its authenticity & age this egg is a bargain at only $89.99

Seaside Egg is painted in a totally modern design. These photos show only two sides. A dolphin, a fish & a sea-horse are depicted in a lovely bright blue ocean decorated with mult-coloured dots. Most dots are painted in gloss paint which gives this egg a really bright happy feel. This modern painted emu egg is complemented nicely by our option bright shiny brass emu egg stand. Egg only priced at $69.99
Natural Emu Egg is unusual as it is painted on the original unaltered background colour of the emu egg. The surface of the egg was sealed with a modern sealing agent before the paint was applied. An emu standing + an emu walking have been painted on the two faces. Dotwork in a traditional pattern has been added. This egg would look particularly good in a collection as it shows the natural egg which is often completely destroyed by painting over or carved away. Simple designs on emu eggs were often done by desert Aborigines in by-gone days. Stand not included. $31.00
